I talk with energy expert Greg Pahl, author of
POWER FROM THE PEOPLE,
a new book about making community-based sustainable energy a reality.
More than ninety percent of the electricity we use to light our communities—
and nearly all the energy we use to run our cars,
heat our homes and power our factories—
comes from large, centralized, highly polluting, nonrenewable sources.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
In his new book, Pahl explains how American communities can plan, organize,
finance and launch their own community-scale, renewable energy projects
that harvest energy from the sun, wind, water and earth.
Pahl is the author of numerous books on energy and has been involved
in environmental issues for 30 years. He uses examples drawn
from around the country and around the world to illustrate
how homeowners, co-ops, nonprofits, governments and businesses
are already putting power in the hands of local communities
through energy-efficiency measures and distributed energy programs.
As we face peak oil, cope with climate change and address the need
to transition to a more sustainable future, Power From the People seeks
to empower communities to prepare for the emerging energy crisis.
Moreover, its strategies and solutions are based on current, available technology—
not wishful thinking—with an emphasis on local ownership to help fuel
local economic development and provide greater energy security.
